This homemade food for diabetic dogs is formulated for pooch with daily energy requirement (DER) of 2314 Kcal. It’s made of low carb and low fat. It’s rich in protein, fiber and chromium, substances needed for good management of diabetes in dogs.

On the norm, a dog with daily energy needs of 2314 Kcal should have about 402g of carb. This is the AAFCO standard.

For a diabetic dog, a meal’s carb content should be less than 50%, which is 45% in this case. If we make all the 2314 Kcal to come mainly from protein, we’ll put the dog at the risk of renal failure.

This recipe contains 35% of protein. And it’s a healthy one for a dog with diabetes. The fat content is very needed to ensure that the dog doesn’t lose weight.

Barley is one of the best home foods for dogs with diabetes because it’s rich in fiber and chromium and low in glucose. Fiber and chromium are very important substances needed in the management of diabetes in dogs.

Remember, this recipe is for a dog with a Daily Energy Requirement of 2314 Kcal. Adjustment is needed for a dog with different calories requirements.

Step 2
Add celery, carrot, broccoli, canola oil and all the supplements, and cook for an additional 5 minutes.

Step 3
Remove from heat and cool. Put in the fridge till using.

Feeding Direction

Your dog should be fed within 2 hours of subcutaneous administration of lente insulin or within 6 hours of protamine zinc insulin.

A feasible compromise is to feed the dog immediately following the insulin injection. This considerably simplifies the home treatment regimen for most dog owners while still allowing good glycemic control to be readily achieved. In addition, many owners prefer this regimen because they feel their pet is rewarded for submitting to the injection.

Every meal should contain roughly the same ingredients and calorie content, and should be fed at the same time each day. The owners of diabetic dogs should be aware that a consistent insulin-dosing and feeding routine is optimal. This is an important aspect of diabetes management in dogs and owner compliance should be encouraged.

Note: This recipe is 2314 Kcal. Ensure you know your dog daily energy requirement (DER) to know the portion of this recipe you need and feed her.
